Pain Management Options Beyond Medication and Surgery

Pain Management Options Beyond Medication and Surgery

Chronic pain takes a major toll on your life. Suddenly, tasks that used to be simple require so much more energy. You might pull back from activities you used to love. Everything in your life gets focused through the lens of your pain.

You’re not stuck this way, though. And getting relief doesn’t have to mean having surgery or taking a prescription — and facing its possible side effects.

At Texas Pain & Orthopedics in Pflugerville, Texas, Ike Malik, MD, specializes in pain management. He works with you to determine what’s causing your pain, then develops a personalized plan to address it.

Some of your treatment options beyond surgery and medication include:

Physical therapy

Through physical therapy, you can stretch and/or strengthen your body in ways that minimize your pain. If a particularly stiff area makes your pain worse, for example, a physical therapist can help you address the tension there. Relieving stress can relieve the pain.

Similarly, strengthening the muscles and tendons around a painful area can offer it more support. That can lessen discomfort.

In short, physical therapy can be a big asset to people living with chronic pain.

Regenerative medicine

Regenerative medicine uses the body’s own healing capabilities.

If Dr. Malik recommends platelet-rich plasma (PRP), for example, he takes a tiny sample of your blood. With a centrifuge, he separates out the platelets. Your platelets contain growth factors that stimulate and support healing. Injecting that PRP into a painful area can help it heal and function better.

Regenerative medicine is a fairly new field, but early research shows that it can make a difference for people living with chronic knee and back pain.

Nerve treatment

Your nerves are responsible for sending pain signals to your brain. A lot of cases of chronic pain can be relieved by interfering with that signaling.

Dr. Malik offers nerve blocks, for example. This means that he injects a medication into the applicable nerve to block pain signaling. Or Dr. Malik can use radiofrequency ablation to damage the nerve so it stops telling your brain you’re in pain.

For low back pain, spinal cord stimulation gives you a lasting way to interrupt pain signaling from your nerves.

How to get personalized care for your pain

Dr. Malik takes the time to understand your symptoms and the source of your pain. This allows him to tailor treatment to best alleviate your specific pain.

He might recommend a program that combines physical therapy, regenerative medicine, and activity modifications, for example.
